Trumpeter Brian McWhorter: Ligeti’s “Mysteries of the Macabre”

There is so much to love and study about this performance, and not just Brian McWhorter’s superb tone, technique, and intonation. It’s a great reminder how much other “stuff” is behind a good performance, not just the sounds coming out of your horn: stage presence, facial expressions, movement, yadda yadda. The whole is more than the sum of the parts. The techniques in the video below wouldn’t go over well for the Haydn, but, well, I’m guessing you know what I’m talking about. Check it out.

For another great performance of this piece, listen to the wacky and phenomenal soprano Barbara Hannigan with the  London Symphony Orchestra, directed by Sir Simon Rattle.
