Check Out This Crazy Mute!

Here’s one of the greats more people should know about: Nat Adderley. Check out his discography. Nat’s brother is saxman Cannonball Adderley (who, with Miles Davis, created one of my all-time fave jazz albums, Somethin’ Else).

The crazy mute in this post’s title appears at 1:46 on Jimmy Cleveland’s trombone in the video below. Nice sound!

One of my favorite performances is the solo Nat Adderley takes in the tune 74 Miles Away. Check it out below. It’s in 7/4 time, hence the title. Not only is it an interesting solo from Adderley, but he ends it way, way down in the pedal register.

Not sure what the pedal register is or how it can help your playing? An entire chapter is devoted to it in Sound the Trumpet: How to Blow Your Own Horn.

His solo starts around 7:15, cued up below.
