Maynard was a phenomenal performer and a tireless educator. And he was and is a god of the altissimo range on the trumpet. Here’s Maynard giving some pointers on increasing range. Great advice! Bonus quote around 4:58 in response to Maynard’s excellent question, the cameraman says: “To get a date.”

If you can’t take it up a minor third, try for a major second. This will also help you learn the tune in more than one key, always a good idea. There’s a whole chapter in Sound the Trumpet: How to Blow Your Own Horn on how to extend your range and endurance, including a lot of the tips Maynard gives, as well as exercises and other important advice.
