My own taste for trumpet sound goes like this: The darker the tone the better. It’s why I really like the sound of most Monette trumpets, and most especially the flumpet and Dave’s new flugelhorn. Some people don’t like the Monette sound, but a lot of great players do. I frequently learn of new players from the Monette shop videos. Like the first vid below, French trumpeter Renaud Gensane, who is in the shop messing about with some new horns and casually tosses off an F above double-C.
Here are five great players (Bernat, Troy, Ron, Rashawn, and Wynton) messing about on the new Monette flugelhorn.
And here’s a video the great Scotty Barnhart (jazz chair in the Basie Big Band) on the flumpet, playing Meditation. The flumpet is an instrument Dave Monette invented around 1990 for jazz legend Art Farmer. Love the tone quality of this horn. There’s a sound-test between the Monette flugel and flumpet over on the Monette Facebook page. See you you can tell the difference between the two….
Here’s a closeup of a flumpet in its case. Gorgeous!
